Newchurch 2000 Award Scheme

The Newchurch 2000 Award Scheme was instigated by the late Libby Baxter to mark the arrival of the Millennium within our parish.

Diana and Peter Dunning are the winners of The Newchurch Award for 2023 in recognition of the tireless work they do for the village.
They help with the running of the Village Hall for which Diana is the bookings secretary and Peter the treasurer.
Peter, as the church warden, shares the opening and closing of the church everyday.
Diana has baked vast quantities of cakes for the coffee mornings and organises all of the church fairs.
They both do so much more besides this, being always on hand to help with anything needed.

The Scheme has two objectives:Village_award_board_2020.jpg

  1. To annually mark and reward a resident of the parish who has, through their own time, effort and skills, made a significant contribution over a number of years, to the life and facilities of our community. It is no surprise that winners are often drawn from the Parish Council, the PCC, the Village Hall and Social Club committees along with the many other Village organisations.

  2. To provide grants available to assist worthy causes and projects within our community which are a benefit to all. We have a great communal spirit in our sparsely populated parish and this scheme recognises and fosters that spirit.

How is it operated?

Every year in December a small committee of past winners, currently chaired by Helen Langrish, consider nominated candidates and elect a winner for the past year.

There is a small monetary award and the winners name is added to the Honours Board in the Village Hall Community Room.

Anyone can make a nomination by emailing webmaster@newchurchvillage.org.

Libby Baxter

The Newchurch 2000 Award Scheme is one of several projects instigated by Libby Baxter, herself a great contributor to our community.

Other projects that she is instigated at the time of the Millennium were:

The Millennium Name plaques

One was made for every house in the village and you may notice these green personalised ‘2000` name plaques on many of the houses.

The Spinney

At the junction of Newchurch Lane with the Bilsington road, a quiet place to sit or walk the dog, planted with natural tree species.
