Sources of Advice and Help for the Cost of Living Crisis
If you’re concerned about managing your household bills over the coming winter, there are lots of bodies able to provide information and practical help.
Newchurch Parish Council has a role in signposting residents towards the following helpful information sources, which should be up-to-date and accurate.
The Chancellor’s Financial Statement in mid-November 2022 has had an effect on how payments for fuel bills will be distributed – but if you want to check on the amounts available to your household, a good starting point would be:
https://www.gov.uk/check-benefits-financial-support
The County-wide scheme of payments, where the money comes from Central Government for local distribution, is available here:
https://www.kent.gov.uk/leisure-and-community/cost-of-living-support
Your District Council (Folkestone & Hythe – formerly called Shepway) runs local premises known as ‘hubs’ for advice and ‘warm space’ activities – well worth checking out:
https://www.folkestone-hythe.gov.uk/help-and-support-with-your-finances
And if it’s just tips on keeping warm but also keeping bills down, there are a lot of charitable bodies prepared to give sound advice, like:
https://energysavingtrust.org.uk/energy-saving-budget/
BUT BEWARE! Under the guise of the ‘Government Help for Energy Bills’ there are some scams operating on the Internet or through phone calls. The fraudsters will go to great lengths to get your bank account details, so go first to alerts such as Kent County Council’s Trading Standards page to scope out the pitfalls of responding to the latest ones.

Newchurch Parish Council is currently (Winter 2023) abiding by advice from the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) regarding the return to 'in-person and in-public' meetings under the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.
It is arranging meetings under its risk assessments for such gatherings. Members of the public are welcome to attend on a first-come, first-seated basis, because hygiene precautions at the venue may place a limit on the numbers who can be physically present at the meeting.
Please do not attend if you think that to do so will lead to the spread of infectious diseases. COVID-19 and influenza are of current concern, but other health risks are also possible. It's always a good idea to deploy handkerchieves for coughs, snuffles and sneezes when out in public.
